এই গানগুলো প্রাচীন কাল থেকে মানুষের মুখে মুখে প্রচারিত হয়ে আসছে। তবে ১৯২৩-৩২ সালে ডক্টর দীনেশচন্দ্র সেন এই গানগুলো অন্যান্যদের সহায়তায় সংগ্রহ করেন এবং স্বীয় সম্পাদনায় কলকাতা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় হতে প্রকাশ করেন। তৎকালীন ময়মনসিংহ জেলার নেত্রকোণা মহকুমার আইথর নামক স্থানের আধিবাসী চন্দ্রকুমার দে এসব গাথা সংগ্রহ করছিলেন।
